As this new collection is hot off the press-I am finding that the one piece of jewelry from it that I seem to wear every day, is one of my Wisdom Wand pendants-then I find on some days, if I feel as if I need some extra wisdom, I put on 2 or even three, or.... I typically possess some sort of brilliant foresight (haha) or intention of what a finished piece is, and how I would wear it, yet I am never quite certain about how it will feel on. This piece surprised me, as it has become my every day, and all-time favorite piece of jewelry that I have created thus far. I don’t know, if it’s just the sheer simple elegance of the elongated form, or it’s unfussiness with just the right amount of sparkle, or that it just goes with everything. Also, the bail allows for me to easily put it onto almost any chain for variety. And of course, when one professes something as profound and symbolic as a “wisdom wand pendant”, you might start to believe that it will help you with a bit a wisdom-hey, I need all the help I can get. So fresh on my mind is not just gold for my jewelry, but its history, allure AND its current price! Since the dawn of dawn, the allure of gold has captured…well, everyone…The bright dazzle of this precious metal has symbolized everything from power and wealth to purity and perfection, as well as love, hope, and happiness—and even the sun. In ancient Egypt, rulers like King Tutankhamun were buried with thousands of objects made of pure gold; for a king who was believed to be the living representation of the god of the sun, only gold could represent his power. Thousands of years later, the French ruler Louis XIV gilded furniture and the interior of the Palace of Versailles in gold to communicate his might as “the sun king.” Gold is so valuable and respected that it is one of the rare objects that is saved and passed down through the generations as art, investments, cherished heirlooms, and gifts of love, divinity & devotion.

the mystical story of the Magi, also know as the 3 wise men, the 3 kings and the 3 astrologers (the jury is still out on the actual number of Magi). In the Bible, the three Magi journeyed far, far and away to visit baby Jesus and present him with the most valued of gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. This is the story that inspired my latest collection. Thus it is my grand gesture of honor, to these sacred gifts, accounts, rich and magnificent stories that paved the way to so many almighty ideologies and traditions, old and new.

Remembering Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty

Passing by The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently, I noticed an absence of a line of people waiting to get a glimpse of the late and great Alexander McQueen’s sought after work. This summer I was in that line. The MET was honoring the fashion designer Alexander McQueen in an exhibit called Savage Beauty. The exhibit seemed mythical to me with a somber undertone knowing that this was the last of its kind. It featured numerous McQueen’s pieces, ranging from delicate, floating dresses to meticulously well-tailored jackets to leather corsets and kimonos. Each gallery was carefully decorated to create a mood that fit the clothes. Mirrors, floor-to-ceiling shelves and colorful projections enhanced the galleries divided into themes: Romantic Naturalism, Romantic Primitivism, Romantic Exoticism, Romantic Nationalism, Romantic Gothic and Cabinet of Curiosities and, finally, The Romantic Mind.

McQueen’s career spanned almost two decades but the worlds he created through his clothing knew no bounds. He didn’t hesitate to let his imagination take him anywhere. And his sources of inspiration were endless; they stretched across thousands of years and spanned the globe. I loved seeing how he was inspired by some of history’s greatest and most fascinating women, including Catherine the Great, Marie Antoinette and even Joan of Arc. He was able to tap into these women’s strengths, allure and power and bring them to life through lavish fabrics, patterns and textures. In the end, he did more than just create clothes; he used them as a way to express his notions about art, culture, nature, and identity. And he had an exceptional perspective on the way in which clothes shape a woman. He didn’t want his clothes to make women look “naïve” In fact, he said, “I want to empower women.” He wanted women wearing his clothes to look powerful. He was just as inspired by nature as the opulence of history, royalty and tradition. I think that creativity that strives to bring the past into the present is most successful in creating adornments for the future.

Alexander McQueen, you inspire me to take my imagination anywhere and to know no bounds. Thank you.

BROADWAY’S PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT, THE MUSICAL:: glitter & levitating divas galore

Last night I attended the opening night of “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”, Broadways interpretation of the Aussie cult classic film. Priscilla and Muriel's Wedding were a pre-requisite to my college extra circular films. It was a star studded filled audience; Bette Midler, Christie Brinkley, Guy Pearce, Renee Zellweger, Joan Rivers, Kathleen Turner, Daryl Roth, Bruce Vilanch and of course many drag queens and performers; Flotilla DeBarge, Bianca Del Rio, Sherry Vine, Logan Hardcore, and the adorable Charlotte Rae from Facts of Life sat 2 rows in front of me. The Broadway version lost some of the dark humor and interest of the film. It seems to be adapted for a more American stage flavor that leaves nothing for the imagination. Nonetheless, the campy music was as infectious as Mama Mia, and all the drag queen glitter costumes & levitating divas uplifted my spirits. The New York Public Library is hosting an extraordinary interfaith exhibit currently; Three Faiths: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. This is a remarkable insight into the history of the Abrahamic faiths and their commonalities. This exhibit was described at a press preview by the NYPL president as the “single most important, beautiful, exquisitely designed exhibit in the modern history of the New York Public Library,” Being showcased are some exceedingly rare and truly divine works; 9th century, large typeface fragment from the famous Iraqi Qur’an from the city of Kufa, a first edition of Martin Luther’s Wittenberg translation of the Bible from 1522, a lavish Amsterdam Megillah from 1686, and a Latin Harkness Gospels from Landévennec, Britanny, circa 900 Common Era. The premise of “Three Faiths” is to show commonalities of the three spiritual traditions. There is an absence of hostility that so often plagues the common persons one-dimensional perspective. Only the common denomination of peace, love and beauty are represented here.

Aesthetically, I am enchanted with the rich look of Calligraphy and words of canonical texts. Spiritually, any time I am entrenched in such profound divine dogmatic doctrines, I become unworldly inspired and enlightened to write, design and seek more knowledge and compassion. Perhaps my true identity is that of a scholar, a sunday driver amateur of sorts, yearning to unlock the universe through the polar opposite domains of science and theology, and my calling is to unveil my findings into golden trinkets. GENEVA— A ring that graced the block at Sotheby’s Geneva earlier this week has shattered the record for any jewel sold at auction, twinkling past its presale estimate of $27-38 million to fetch a flashy $46 million. The gem was snatched up by London jewelry dealer Laurence Graff, who offered his closing bid over the phone with Sotheby’s Asia chairman Patti Wong bidding on his behalf. Put up for sale by a private collector, the ring features a dazzling 24.78-carat emerald-cut diamond of a “fancy intense pink” hue, which is the actual classification given its color by theGemological Institute of America. The auction raised a total of $105 million, exceeding presale expectations of $67-97 million.

When bidding on the stunning lot closed, Sotheby’s international jewelry department chairman Dave Bennett immediately announced the world record to an eruption of applause, Sky News reports. Of the gem, last seen on the market 60 years ago when it was purchased from famed jeweler Harry Winston, Graff states: “It is the most fabulous diamond I’ve seen in the history my career.” And Bennett agrees. “It was simply one of the most desirably diamonds I have seen during my 35-year career at Sotheby’s,” the Sotheby’s chairman said in the auction house’s statement.

The diamond — an exceedingly rare specimen, as there is a noted scarcity of pink diamonds of more than 20 carats — has been proudly named the “Graff Pink” by its new owner. In paying the astronomical sum, Graff broke his own previous record for a gem at auction, which he set in December 2008 when he paid $24 million for the 35.56-carat grayish-blue “Wittelsbach Diamond” at Christie’s London. French couturier, Christophe Guillarmé, explains, “jewellery is clearly an obvious extension of an outfit and I use it on the catwalk to add fun and glamour to my creations. In some cases, we use extravagant and fancy jewellery to give a strong eye-catching look.” And the look is what it is all about. For the Spring/Summer 2010 collections, global runways were full of statement-making necklaces, stackable bangles, wide cuffs, and dangling hoops. Viennese Glamour and Old World Splendor at Cafe Sabarsky

This cafe is housed in the German-Austrian art museum Neue Galerie. Not only does this historic Beaux-Arts mansion house some of my favorite works of art and decorative objects, the cafe is unsurpassed in Manhattan. This entire setting is my notion of elegant beauty. I usually go for brunch there with my dear Austrian friend. Her family runs an Austrian bakery and confectionery in the charming town of Weiz, Austria (in which I have had the delight and pleasure of tasting some of their chocolate! YUM). She states that Cafe Sabarsky is the most authentic Austrian setting in the city. So if it wins the heart of my Authentic Austrian friend, then it is certainly worthy! It evokes a real Viennese Glamour and an Old World splendor. I am ready to go back for more visual inspiration!

Be mindful of your impulsive facebook posts. One of my recent posts led me to Portland, Oregon on an impromptu whim. My post was “Who needs me to go with them to YEASAYER May 4th at Webster Hall? I am unable to get tickets-sold out.” Short story- within a hour, my friend living in Portland got tickets to the local concert there at the Wonder Ballroom. The next day I had airline tickets. It certainly did not hurt that there were some jewelry stores I wanted to explore, and some coffee houses, and some vintage stores, and my friend has a vineyard...For the sake of inspiration...by all means I went. Alas, I am back to Manhattan; refreshed by Portland’s mellow and soothing energy, pure air and food, natural scenic backdrops (Mt. Hood), and energized by its funky eclectic feel. Portland has a tantalizing vibe, historic charm, easy MAX public transportation, sumptuous and innovative culinary cuisine (Le Pigeon), great coffee/tea (Stumptown & Fehrenbacher Hof) , Anna Bananas Oregon Berry Smoothies-YUM, Powells Bookstore, chic hotels emphasizing local and organic sourcing (The Nines), great boutique shopping (Moule and Covet...). Clean your Jewelry and Diamonds Using Vodka

Here is an interesting method for cleaning your jewelry. I myself have yet to try this, I use an ultrasonic cleaner. However, I am in the mood for a Vodka Cranberry Elixir so I might test this. Now, I do not advocate it yet, hence clean at your own risk!

Things You'll Need: Diamond or other jewelry, jewelry brush, small bowl, vodka, jewelry cloth or t shirt

POUR a small amount of vodka into a small dish or bowl. Pour enough so that the jewelry will be completely covered when it is submerged.

PLACE your desired jewelry into the vodka and let it soak for 30-45 seconds. It really does not need to soak very long in order to get it to sparkle.

USE a jewelery brush or any soft bristled brush to remove any build up in the jewelry's setting. Gently work in the areas and underneath the stone. If you do not have one, you can skip this step.

RINSE off jewelry with warm water to remove vodka cleaning agent. Be sure to handle the item with care. Have the water on a gentle stream so that way you lower the risk of dropping it.

DRY jewelry off gently with soft cloth or even a t-shirt.

Any time I hear of Jeff Koons, the artist, I instinctively laugh, a seriously sincere laugh with a slight smirk and smile. I fell in love with Jeff’s work in one of my Art History college classes years ago. It was either Puppy or The Pink Panther that got me. So this morning when I read the Arts & Leisure section of the New York Times I was giddy to see him on the front page being interviewed by Randy Kennedy. Is it serendipity that this creator of mega-size cartoon and whimsical art has the last name Koons? Regardless, one day I will have a gargantuan size balloon from Koons.

I saw something special, something surreal, something sublime, something spectacular; Avatar the movie. I have seen it in 3-D twice now. Going in, I only knew that it was directed by James Cameron and that it took 14 years to make. I had no expectations about the plot, or anything. I left feeling uplifted, hopeful and awesomely awestruck. It was glorious, majestic and the aesthetic ethereal beauty is unsurpassed in today’s mainstream film. Avatar is profound and quite thought provoking. Men prove themselves by actions, not words, and women kick some ass. There was a welcoming absence of lewdness and a needed abundance of love. They saw it and now I truly see it.

Katrina Kelly Jewelry is gracing the covers of recent magazines and adorning beautiful strong women with fierce discerning tastes. The collection is in its year and a half début, and is receiving lovely accolades and praise. The designs are feminine and romantic heirlooms for the women of today.

The designer, Katrina started out yearning to be a fashion designer. She studied fashion, however gravitated towards a world of gems and precious metal, ending up with a Fine Arts degree in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design. She then took her education to a higher level by studying jewelry with masters in Florence, Italy. When this classical training was complete, she worked under a few jewelry designers as a bench jeweler, received hands on experience at a Fine Turkish jewelry company and toiled in her familys finance company for a few years before launching this line.

The jewelry has its own definitive style and look-A hybrid or fusion of cross cultures-Taking in the fine intricate Italian mastery with the exotic look of Turkey, and then bringing in Katrina’s zealous fascination of French Baroque, Persian and Art Nouveau styles.

She takes cues and inspiration from her incessant travels, her respect of all cultures, and awe of divinity. Katrina states, “To aspire, to inspire and to be inspired. I aspire to inspire. I seek to inspire. My plight is to create a cohesive coalition of worlds for women; for the owner of my work to be inspired. My inspirations stem from ideas, travels, cultures, divinity, architecture, music, furniture, antiques and literature, epicurean escapes... I turn profound ideas into tangible decorative objects called jewelry. I hope that when women don my work they will appreciate that the designer was inspired. I hope that she becomes inspired, and all that see her will become inspired. And if nothing more, jewelry just makes us women feel pretty!”

What is more uplifting and enriching than a work/play trip? Not much really… An opportunity to see friends and put my jewelry in a new store presented itself at the most opportune time. Katrina Kelly Jewelry was delighted to pick up a new store in Zurich, Switzerland and even more thrilled to get to visit it in person. Coincidentally, I have friends living in the area so it made the trip even more welcoming and enticing. After visiting the jewelry store in Zurich, I went to Geneva to stay at one of my best friend’s home, which is fittingly surrounded by glorious lush vineyards. Walks in these vineyards were quite celestial. She made the most delicious fondue-thank you! I trekked to CERN to try and unlock the key to the universe, without prevail-yet anyway. Then, Paris for cafes, fashion, to see another friend and attend a jewellery/accessories show. I was ridiculously overwhelmed at all the brilliant, well made and lavish designs that I saw this season; costume jewelry, fashion jewelry, fine jewelry, accessories, lace, lingerie, shoes, clothes… I am intensely inspired, rejuvenated and so anxious to design more collections! Here are some pictures of the Texas Heart I know best-Houston, Texas- on a recent trip back. I have lived in Dallas, Denton and Houston. I have taught jewelry design in The Hill Country, and played extensively in Austin, Texas; the home of Whole Foods and one of the most beautiful lakes that I have ever seen. I do think it is in a Texans DNA to be pretentiously proud of being “TEXAN.” Thank you to all these Texans that take such great pride in their endeavors so that we can all enjoy; Kraftsman Bakery, Rice University for their oak alley running path, Croissant Brioche, Shivas Indian Food, Ruggles Cafe, Café Brasil, Domy Bookstore, Rothko Chapel, Cyclone Anaya’s, Alabama Bookstore, Roulas Nail Salon; And ALL Westheimer and Montrose Area local cafes, bookstores and shops. I have had a most unique invitation recently. It was an invitation to visit South Dakota. Sturgis, South Dakota, specifically; a beautiful land, where buffalo and Harley Davidson’s roam. Once a year, half a million plus motorcycle enthusiasts take great pride in attending a Legendary Motorcycle Rally here. They indulge in a camaraderie and admiration for open air and motorcycles. If one can see through the sea of chrome, the chrome eventually turns to gold and quartz. As a jewelry designer, it was the gold and minerals history that caught my attention. A gold rush in the late 1800’s enticed an influx of people willing to risk possible attacks from Sioux Indians to get their stake of gold. And then there is the second longest cave in America called The Jewel Cave, The Badlands, Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore, Wild Bill…

This weekend I saw Pixar’s newest endeavor, “Up”. Thanks to Pixar for more innovative and inspiring visuals. Pixar, as usual, proves to be the big wheel of playful and creative films for all. However, are cartoons supposed to make one cry? A bit of a downer for the adults, however. I desired more UP. But…, the imagery, fantasies, and adventures make UP for the DOWNS. Certainly, a movie that spans all generations. Oh, this movie was in 3-D in case you did not know. In all, it is worth the ups and downs. By Katrina Kelly

As I return back to my business as usual state of mind, I ponder about the city that hosted a recent jewelry show that I attended in Las Vegas…

Amongst the wide vast desert, a town called Las Vegas hollers and flaunts itself.

Gambling was once banned then unbanned-workers flocked to help build a dam, railroad workers put down their roots. The Rat Pack arrived, then Howard Hughes bought a hotel. Gamblers gambled. So it goes.

Even among this artificial city of glitz, glamour, luster, lights and ostensible lewdness, any artist can be somewhat inspired in the Wondrous Wonder World. Now as I get back to reality, I am pondering about what all the Vegas showgirls and boys think about when they get home. By: Katrina Kelly

A weekend of exterior rain encouraged a mirage of interior adventures; Chelsea Art Galleries-The colors of whimsy and delight caught my fancy on this gloomy, rainy weekend. For an indoor artificial woods theme decked in arbitrary colors and repetitive patterns, head to The Perry Rubenstein Gallery and enter Richard Wood’s Nature Show. The floors and walls are engulfed in animated line drawings and flowers from his Floral repeat series. If you are into German, Scandinavian or IKEA minimalism, then go next door to the Leo Koenig Inc. Gallery. Become entranced in Greg Bogin’s “happy place.” I really want some of Greg’s work-It made me happy. To partake in an art installment, head to 22nd Street and 10th Avenue. There is a two story sustainable bamboo piece of architecture. One can walk up its undulating spiral bamboo ramp, to, well, nowhere, and then walk back down. I was not certain that it would sustain me walking on it, thus I simply observed others walk to nowhere and back, happily. By Katrina Kelly

The Clash of the Turks-Pagans, Romans, Christians, Constantinople, Tribes, Sultans, Suleyman, Ottomans, Muslims, Muhammad. AND, Tulips, Scarves, The Bosphorus, Yalis (Villas on the Sea), Spices, Jewelry, Gold, Bazaars, Prayers, Kebabs, Minarets, Density, Calligraphy and Genuine Generosity, is what Istanbul is made of. If one understands Istanbul’s political, religious and artistic history, then one is innately drawn to this land of fusion and collision . Half of the city is on Asia; the other half on Europe; half of the women done scarves on their heads, the other half done bleach, half of the cafes serve backgammon boards and Turkish coffee, the other half are newly opened Starbucks, sadly…The vast Ottoman Empire produced some of the greatest and glorious architecture of any epoch. Turkey is incessantly one of my strongest jewelry inspirations. And every trip back there rejuvenates my spirit and soul. Enjoy the pictures and future collections. Katrina Kelly
